Capt. David L. Woodbury
Acting Deputy Chief of Naval Research, Naval Air Warfare and Weapons Science and Technology Department

Capt. Woodbury is the acting Deputy Chief for Naval Research, Naval Air Warfare and Weapons Science and Technology Department at the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in Arlington, Va.

He is a 1988 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, earning a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering. He is also a graduate of the University of Tennessee, with a Master of Science in aviation systems. He earned designation as a Naval Aviator in 1990 and has enjoyed a Navy career spanning 25 years with diverse assignments in disparate locations

His operational experience includes tours as a member of VFA-195 – forward deployed to Atsugi, Japan – and as a department head in VFA-82, stationed in Beaufort, S.C. He has deployed aboard USS Independence (CV-62), USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), flying combat missions over Iraq in support of U.N. Operation Southern Watch, and Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Capt. Woodbury is a 1996 graduate of United States Navy Test Pilot School (USNTPS) and was subsequently assigned to Naval Strike Test Squadron (now VX-23), also located at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md. As a test pilot and program officer he led and participated in numerous projects primarily involving aircraft carrier suitability and ordnance integration for the F/A-18 Hornet. He later returned to Patuxent River and served as Senior Fixed Wing Instructor at USNTPS, before leaving to become Executive Officer, then Commanding Officer of Strike Fighter Weapons School Atlantic at Naval Air Station Oceana, Va.

Most recently, Capt. Woodbury is following up a Joint tour at a NATO operational headquarters in Brunssum, the Netherlands, with his current position at ONR. In this role, he oversees the development and execution of Science and Technology programs for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps in support of the chief of naval research.

Capt. Woodbury has over 4,000 hours of flight time in over 30 aircraft, 700 carrier landings and is a graduate of Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN). He has been awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross with combat distinction and the Strike/Flight Air Medal (seven awards.)
