1/11/2013 - WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- The Air Force released a new Vision document today outlining the force's vision and way forward.

"Focused on 'Airmen, Mission, and Innovation,' I believe this short document captures what today's Air Force is all about and where I think we ought to focus on for tomorrow," said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III in an email to all Airmen.

"We are the greatest air force in the world because of our Airmen--Active, Reserve, Guard, and Civilian--to remain the greatest, we must make our team even stronger," the Vision states.

The Vision discusses the Air Force's enduring contributions of air and space superiority; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; rapid global mobility; global strike; and command and control and the need to strengthen them.

"We already combine our air, space, and cyber forces to maximize these enduring contributions, but the way we execute these five calling cards must continually evolve as we strive to increase our asymmetric advantage," the Vision says. "Our Airmen's ability to rethink the battle while incorporating new technologies will improve the varied ways our Air Force accomplishes its missions.

"Every Airman should constantly look for smarter ways to do business. The person closest to the problem is often the one with the best solution. Leaders should empower Airmen to think creatively, find new solutions, and make decisions," according to the Vision.

The Vision concludes with a call to action for all Airmen to tell their story, being proud of who they are, what they do, and how well they accomplish the mission.

4 pages versus 40 is refreshing. We will reinvigorate squadrons should be a call to all higher headquarters to lean out inefficient procedures processes and instructons that hinder units from focusing on what matters...training organizing equipping and deploying and yes inspections are included. If we at higher headquarters are levying anything on units that don't satisfy these ends we should stop elimate them NOW Time for some good ole common sense in how we run the Air Force Cheers Gen Welsh

I'm reminded of the old adage lead follow or get out of the way. If you're sitting around waiting to be inspired and if you're not out there inspiring yourself and other people through your passion you're in the way. Lead and inspire others or follow someone who inspires you.

Sir I expected that this Vision would be different from previous ones not that our function has changed but I expect the vision of one leader to be as different as the men themselves. A book from the previous Chief of Staff reading list titled Start With Why explains this best but I do not see your purpose in this vision. What I see is a regurgitation of a PME course outline. The tagline is curious. I do believe we are still the world's greatest Air Force even though we accomplish this with fewer Airmen and resources every year. Innovation is the most clever description of Do More With Less that I have ever seen. Your Airmen are anxious to see where we go from here and we are ready to be inspired by our leaders.

The AF has a vast pool of intelligent and motivated people willing to put forth new and innovative ideas but are held back by bureaucratic institions. The AF needs to rethink organizational structures and break down barriers between individuals with information and decision makers needing that information. Is the Air Force really up to the Chief's challenge Or will the current culture that values hubris over true leadership prevail

Some Guy I'm sure several readers will vouch for the fact that I'm one of the most cynical posters on here and I wanted to hate the new vision document but I believe you are dead wrong on your analysis. The document is perfect for our vision because it speaks to the entire org and each individual.

Beloved CSAFThis is coming from a guy who has met you more than once and been impressed every time. You have to put out better strategic communication pieces than this. I have watched your speeches and they are flat out inspiring One can tell from the body of the e-mail you sent that you wrote that e-mail. The I'd consider it a personal favor made me pop that attachment open and glue my eyes to the screen until I was finished reading the vision. But the document itself was rough. It looks like something written by the very professional gurus at the LeMay Center. Big ideas do often require big terms without a doubt but who is your target Are you aiming for the youngest Lieutenants and Airmen with modernizing our capabilities and maximizing potential by refining development programs Or are you only aiming for the FGOs and Chiefs who have finished their last batch of PMEIt's no slight on our extraordinarily professional Airmen either. They have a vast
