International Day of the Girl Child

International Day of the Girl Child

11 October 2012

In December 2011, the United Nations' General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare this the International Day of the Girl Child, establishing a day to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world and to galvanize global commitments to end gender stereotypes, discrimination, violence, and economic disparities that disproportionately affect girls.

This year, in honor of the first-ever observance of International Day of the Girl Child, the U.S. Department of State will host events in Washington DC and at posts abroad that will focus on expanding opportunities for and raising the status of girls around the world.
