Inspector General

Mission: Provide quality assistance and support to all military, civilian personnel and family members within IMCOM-E and to conduct inspections and investigations as directed by the Region Director.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU CONTACT THE IG:
1. Be sure you have a problem, not just a peeve.
(Are the cooks turning out lousy chow or was it just one bad meal.)
2. Give your chain of command a chance to solve the problem.
(Many problems must be addressed to the chain of command for resolution anyway.)
3. Keep in mind that IG’s are not policy makers.
(If a policy is flawed, you can submit a proposed change on a DA Form 2028.)
4. If IG assistance is needed, contact your local IG first.
(IG’s at higher commands will normally refer the case to the local IG for action. Additionally, many commands have their own IG’s (USAREUR, 21st TSC, AAFES, ERMC, EUCOM etc.). If you don’t know who your local IG is, we can point you in the right direction.
5. Be honest and don’t provide misleading information.
(IG’s will discover the truth quickly in most cases and there are penalties for knowingly providing false information.)
6. Keep in mind that IG’s can only recommend, not order a resolution.
(Only commanders can order; the role of the IG is to advise the commander.)
7. Remember IG’s can only resolve a case on the basis of fact.
(Your claim that a supervisor violated the rules does not make it a fact. A claim must be supported with evidence.)
8. Don’t expect instant action on your request. Be patient.
(Investigations and inquiries take time and IG’s tend to have heavy workloads.)
9. Be prepared to take “No” for the answer.
(In any case, “Yes” or “No”, the IG will explain.)

SUBMITTING AN INSPECTOR GENERAL ACTION REQUEST (IGAR):
Individuals requesting assistance should fill out an Inspector General Action Request Form (DA Form 1559-R), prior to seeing the IG. Pertinent details from the DA Form 1559-R provide the IG with an initial information base with which to begin an inquiry, as well as the ability to provide a response back to the requestor. Due to the nature of electronic communications, it is important to keep in mind when contacting the IG via email, the possibility exists that the message may be seen by someone other than the IG.
When completing the “Specific Action Requested” section of the DA Form 1559-R, ask yourself, “What do I want the IG to do for me?” Be brief and to the point. Lastly, don’t forget to sign the form, unless you wish to remain anonymous. Also, be aware that submitting an issue anonymously, makes it impossible for the IG to provide the requestor a response concerning findings directly impacting him or her.
