Mary C. Blehar, Ph.D.
Senior Research Advisor
Mary C. Blehar, Ph.D., joined the ORWH as a senior research advisor in 2012. Since 2008, as a consultant to ORWH, she helped conceptualize, write, and implement the NIH Strategic Plan for Women’s Health: Moving into the Future with New Dimensions and Strategies: a Vision for 2020 for Women’s Health Research. Prior to her work with ORWH, Dr. Blehar held several positions at the NIH, including program director, Cancer Prevention, Control, Population and Behavioral Sciences Training and Career development program at the National Cancer Institute. At the National Institute of Mental Health, she held several positions including director, Women’s Programs, Mood, Anxiety and Personality Disorders Research Branch; program director, Adult Psychopathology and Prevention Program; and staff collaborator for the NIH bipolar Disorder Molecular Genetics Initiative. She has served on a number of trans-NIH committees including the NIH Coordinating Committee for Women’s Health, (CCRWH) and the National Children’s Study Pregnancy and the Infant Workgroup. Her work on trans-DHHS committees include the Executive Planning Committee for the Office on Women’s Health/Surgeon General’s Project on Women’s Mental Health; the Inter-Agency Federal Strategic Planning Group on “Safe Motherhood;” and the Scientific Advisory Panel for the HRSA Healthy Start Program.
Prior to coming to NIH, Dr. Blehar served at Johns Hopkins University as a Research Scientist and as the Project Director for the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Infant Development. There she co-authored Patterns of Attachment with Mary Ainsworth, Everett Waters, and Sally Wall. At NIMH she coauthored the American Psychological Association’s report on Women and Depression. Dr Blehar has also published over 60 peer-reviewed papers and has edited books and journals on mental health-related topics. Dr. Blehar has psychology degree from Johns Hopkins University.
