Producing a workforce of sufficient size and skills is essential to meeting the nation’s health care needs. The nation spends billions of dollars each year on the education and training of the health care workforce, yet basic, comprehensive data on workforce supply and demand do not exist. Effective decision making at the federal, state, and local level requires improved data and information on the current health workforce and a greater understanding of how changes in population will affect future demand for health professionals.
