2/5/2013 - HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- Like most things in life, the Family Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance policy is complex and can be difficult to understand without a bit of guidance.

The FSGLI policy is available to all active servers and members of the Ready Reserve or Guard servicemember and covers spouses and dependent children.

If the spouse is retired military and inactive, they are still able to be covered under the terms of agreement. Families with children between the ages of 18 and 23 are covered by the policy as long as they are in pursuit of a college degree or field-specific training.

If both spouses are active in the service, they can be insured under both the SGLI and FSGLI program for the maximum coverage amount of $500,000 per person. For those who are unsure about enrolling at the start of their deployment, coverage can begin at any point during the tenure.

Military life insurance is an important way to protect loved ones from financial hardship in the event that something were to happen on the field of battle.

For further information, contact Judy Trabucco, casualty assistance representative and survivor benefits counselor at the Airman and Family Readiness Center, at 781-225-2755 or 781-225-2765.
