The following products, research articles and briefs, and tools help administrators and prevention coordinators identify emerging issues, best practices, and comprehensive prevention strategies to facilitate a healthy and supportive environment for diverse student populations, guide the development of student-centered services and programs, support students' academic and social integration into the college environment, promote student engagement in active learning, and foster positive growth and development in students.
Role of Enforcement in Prevention
Describes a number of landmark reports that contain recommendations for addressing alcohol and other drug use by college students, emphasizing the importance of implementing policies on campus and in surrounding communities to change the culture of student drinking through environmental management and enforcement.
AOD Issues at Tribal Colleges and Universities
Describes issues related to alcohol and other drug use among students at the 36 federally recognized Tribal Colleges and Universities in the United States, which enroll approximately 30,000 full-and part-time students.
Be Vocal, Be Visible, Be Visionary: Recommendations for College and University Presidents on Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention
Promotes 13 recommendations for a broader approach to student alcohol abuse, reflecting a more complete understanding of how societal conditions drive alcohol use and the magnitude of alcohol-related problems.
Bullying and Cyberbullying at Colleges and Universities
Points out that bullying can be verbal (name-calling, teasing), social (spreading rumors, leaving people out on purpose, breaking up friendships), physical (hitting, punching, shoving), and cyberbullying (using the Internet, mobile telephones, or other digital technologies to harm others) and describes prevention interventions.
Bystander Intervention
Describes how a bystander approach gives community members specific roles that they can use in preventing sexual violence, including naming and stopping situations before they happen, stepping in during an incident, and speaking out against ideas and behaviors that support sexual violence. This approach develops skills to be an effective and supportive ally to survivors after an assault has taken place.
Engaging the Nation's Community Colleges as Prevention Partners
Provides a report of a Roundtable on Community College Health and Safety: Preventing Substance Abuse and Violence where community college representatives discussed alcohol, other drug, and violence problems at community colleges.
Environmental Management: A Comprehensive Strategy for Reducing Alcohol and Other Drug Use on College Campuses

AOD Screening Tools for College Students
Describes how the goal of screening in student health or other college settings is used to reduce alcohol-related harm. Screening students goes beyond simply identifying and referring students who are alcohol-dependent and require referral to a specialized alcohol treatment program. For example, there is a direct dose-response relationship between drinking and a number of alcohol-related consequences.
Bar Study Stories
Describes research on how availability of cheap drinks in licensed establishments contributes to a host of alcohol-related problems, especially among young people and measures to control that availability.
Campus and Community Coalitions in AOD Prevention
Describes findings from reports such as A Call to Action: Changing the Culture of Drinking at U.S. Colleges (NIAAA 2002) contending that campus and community coalitions are an important component of comprehensive prevention programs in higher education.
Community Colleges-Prevention Challenges
Describes preliminary findings from a three-year study on college alcohol and drug prevention systems by researchers at the University of Minnesota’s Alcohol Epidemiology Program that found that 42 percent of administrators at 106 two-year community and technical colleges across the nation rated student drinking as a “major or moderate problem.”
Drug Abuse on College Campuses: Emerging Issues
Describes trends in illicit drug use among college students, which has been on the decline for the past 30 years, with some exceptions.
Screening and Brief Interventions: Research Update
Describes Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS), a preventive intervention program to reduce drinking and enhance awareness about alcohol-related issues. BASICS targets college students who are considered at risk because of heavy drinking behaviors. The brief intervention relies primarily on a motivational interview to provide students with the skills, knowledge, and insight into the consequences of drinking.
Update on the NIAAA Task Force on College Drinking Recommendations
Describes research at the Alcohol Epidemiology Program at the University of Minnesota that surveyed 351 four-year colleges in the United States to ascertain familiarity with and progress toward implementation of NIAAA recommendations.
College Alcohol Risk Assessment Guide: Environmental Approaches to Prevention
Helps college administrators identify factors within the campus environment that contribute to alcohol-related problems within the context of the public health approach.
Translating Research to Practice: Overcoming Barriers to Implementing Effective Off-Campus Party Prevention
Describes a two-day Training Institute on how to implement evidence-based prevention strategies to reduce the problems related to off-campus parties. It includes copies of presentations and a checklist tool.

To assist educators and education agencies in locating a valid and reliable needs assessment that suits their needs, the Safe and Supportive Schools Technical Assistance Center is developing a compendium of student, staff, and family surveys that can be used as part of a school climate needs assessment.
