Founding Fathers in Finland

Meet Benjamin Franklin and John Morton

Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790) was one of the most prominent Founding Fathers of the United States, by far the most distinguished scientific and literary American of his age: a printer, scientist, inventor, civic activist and diplomat. His 300th birthday is celebrated this year.

John Morton (1724-1777) from Pennsylvania was of Finnish descent; his great grand-father was Martti Marttinen from Rautalampi, Finland. He held numerous civil offices including Justice of the Peace, High Sheriff, Presiding Judge of the General Court, the Court of Common Pleas, and most importantly, he was the delegate who cast the deciding vote in favor of the United States Declaration of Independence.

These men will be travelling to Finland in September, 2006, out of the invitation of Ambassador Ware. Between September 21st and 23rd Finns will have the opportunity to meet with these Founding Fathers.
