Manufacturer's Shipments, Inventories, and Orders

November 2012 new orders for manufactured durable goods were unchanged at $477.6 billion. Shipments rose 0.4 percent, to $483.7 billion. Unfilled orders increased 0.1 percent, to $984.5 billion. And inventories were virtually unchanged at $615.2 billion.

Construction Put in Place

Construction spending in November 2012 was $866.0 billion at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, down 0.3 percent from the revised October 2012 estimate and up 7.7 percent from November 2011.

New Residential Sales

Sales of new single-family houses in November 2012 were 377,000 at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, up 4.4 percent from October’s revised rate and up 15.3 percent from November 2011.

Advance Report on Durable Goods

New orders for manufactured durable goods in November 2012 increased 0.7 percent to $220.9 billion. Excluding transportation, new orders rose 1.6 percent. Overall shipments increased 1.5 percent. Capital goods shipments rose 1.4 percent. Unfilled orders grew 0.1 percent. And inventories increased 0.2 percent in November.

New Residential Construction

Building permits in November 2012 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 899,000, up 3.6 percent from the revised October rate and up 26.8 percent from November 2011. Housing starts in November 2012 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 861,000, down 3.0 percent from the revised October estimate but up 21.6 percent from November 2011.
