Q. Does the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu have a U.S. Commercial Service (USCS) office? 

No, the U.S. Commercial Service does not have an office in Nepal. The Political/Economic Office of the Embassy provides most of the services provided by a USCS office. It primarily serves exporters of U.S. goods and services, but also provides assistance to U.S. businesses interested in investing in Nepal. The P/E Office also provides counseling to interested U.S. businesses and individuals.

Q: I am an American company and want to export to Nepal.  Where do I start?  How do I obtain information on the Nepali market? 

The Nepal Country Commercial Guide (CCG), updated annually by the U.S. Embassy, provides extensive information and analysis on doing business in Nepal. Additionally, U.S. businesses are urged to contact the Political/Economic Office to obtain information on doing business in Nepal.

Q. Which industry sectors offer the best opportunities? 

The Nepal Country Commercial Guide (CCG) lists the leading sectors for U.S. exports and investment in Nepal. In addition to the prospect sectors, U.S. firms should also be aware of opportunities in other sectors of the Nepali economy. Contact the Political/Economic Office for information on the market of opportunities for your particular product or service.

Q. Do any import restrictions apply to my product? 

Please contact the Political/Economic Office to identify import duties and taxes applicable to your specific product or if you need counseling in customs issues.

Q. Where can I obtain financial/commercial references for a Nepali company? 

The Political/Economic Office can investigate the capabilities, legitimacy, and financial strength of your potential Nepali business partners, including available sales, profit figures, and other background information.

Q. Where can I find a list of Nepali business publications to promote my products? 

Advertising through local news papers, FM radio, and TV is the most common way to gain market exposure for your product or service in Nepal. Please refer the Nepal Country Commercial Guide (CCG) for a list of major media outlets. Additionally, the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) can be a good source of information for your specific industry sector.

Q. Can the U.S. Embassy, Kathmandu help me resolve a complaint against a Nepali company? 

If your firm is having difficulties with a Nepali company, please contact the Political/Economic Office and provide detailed information about the situation, contact data, and documented proof of unsuccessful attempts at resolving the problem. We will analyze your case and provide assistance accordingly.

If you need a list of legal firms, please contact the Political/Economic Office.  We can provide you with a list of the major law firms located in Nepal. Please note that the listing of a firm does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Embassy, Kathmandu or any other agency of the U.S. Government.

Q. Do you need a visa to visit Nepal in order to explore business opportunities?

Yes.  However, you can obtain a short-term tourist visa on arrival under which one can conduct limited business activities.

Q. When is the best time to visit Nepal?

Spring and fall are popular times to visit Nepal.  It is advisable to avoid monsoon season, July to September, as travel around the country can be difficult.

Q.  Is there an American Chamber of Commerce in Nepal?

No.  However, there is the Nepal-USA Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NUSACCI) and the American Chamber of Commerce in India that the Embassy has worked closely with in the past.
