Heroes at Heinz Field

VA Healthcare - VISN 4 and the Pittsburgh Steelers joined together for the fifth annual Heroes at Heinz Field event for Veterans who recently served in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Veterans in attendance practiced their football skills alongside eleven current Steelers who also signed autographs and posed for pictures. The Veterans ended the evening with dinner in a stadium lounge that overlooks Heinz Field. View the media coverage below:

Pittsburgh Veteran earns 3 medals at Golden Age Games

In two years, Janet Escobedo of the North Side is a two-time gold medalist. Escobedo, 57, won gold in the discus (18.22 meters) this month at the 26th National Veterans Golden Age Games in St. Louis. 

VA recruiting mental health staff

Recruitment is underway at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System for 35 mental health clinicians and seven support personnel, who will be among 1,600 mental health professionals being hired to help veterans nationwide. 

VA Pittsburgh to dedicate $75.8 million facility Wednesday

The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System on Wednesday will dedicate a new, $75.8 million facility at its University Drive campus. The VA’s Consolidation Building will house outpatient services and 78 private psychiatric beds. 

County gets $217,000 to aid homeless vets

Pennsylvania agencies will receive $1.2 million in federal funding to provide housing and case management for homeless veterans. The Allegheny County Housing Authority will get $217,000 in housing vouchers - the second-highest amount in the state. 

Ambulatory Care Center Achieves LEED Silver Certification

VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS) Ambulatory Care Center was recently awarded LEED-NC Silver certification, using the LEED-NC Rating System version 2.2. The project achieved 33 credit points in addition to meeting all LEED prerequisites. 

The new Ambulatory Care Center at the H. J. Heinz Division integrates primary care, specialty follow-up, physical rehabilitation, audiology, dental, prosthetics, rehab medicine, community services, outpatient pharmacy and patient education.

Cards more than a greeting to soldiers, veterans

Barb Janoscrat keeps a tissue handy whenever she looks over holiday greeting cards drawn by children to send to soldiers, veterans and other members of the military. She is overseeing its Holiday Mail for Heroes program, a Red Cross project with Pitney Bowes to send 1 million cards to service families and veterans at home and abroad.

Local veterans roll through National Wheelchair Games

Tom Strang has been to every National Veterans Wheelchair Games since 1998. But for Strang, the most recent games will be the one he'll always remember. The Canonsburg resident didn't have to travel to Alaska, Denver or Puerto Rico, as he has done to compete in previous games. This time, the 31st annual Games were held in Pittsburgh.
