In addition, if your child will participate in school-sponsored sports, an annual physical exam is also required. A current physical must be on file in the nurse's office before your child can participate in practice or competition.

Physical Exams

  • A complete School Physical by a healthcare provider is highly recommended if your child is entering kindergarten at Brussels American School. The physical may be completed at any medical facility. Please bring a copy of the physical to the school.
  • If your child plays school-sports, then a physical is required once every calendar year while they are attending school at BAS and are involved in sports.
  • The School/Sports Physical can be done at the SHAPE Brussels Health Clinic, which is on the school grounds at BAS. Any student who attends BAS is eligible to have these health requirements completed at no cost, at the SHAPE Brussels Health Clinic. An appointment can be made at the clinic by calling +322-717-9500.

Students who enroll in DoDEA schools are required to meet specific immunization requirements. These requirements represent the minimum requirement and do not necessarily reflect the optimal immunization status for a student.

New Students: From the date of enrollment, new students have 30 days to provide proof of up to date immunizations, according to the requirements listed below. If proof is not provided within 30 days, the student will be disenrolled until proof is provided. Please present the most current shot record to the school nurse at the time of enrollment. The nurse will help you figure out what immunizations your child may need.

Returning Students: Students who have immunizations come due during the school year will have 30 calendar days from the due date to receive their vaccine(s).

DoDEA: Medication at School

Of course, it's best that students not take medicine during school hours. However, when it is necessary for a student to take medication at school, he or she must leave the medication with the school nurse for safekeeping. The medicine must be in a pharmacy-labeled container with the student's name, the name of the medication, and the scheduled dose or doses. Each student must also bring a parent's written permission to take the medication and written orders from the physician.

In extremely rare situations, students are allowed to keep their medicine with them while in school or at school-related activities. The student's prescribing physician must provide a written statement that the student has to keep the medication at all times; also, a parent must provide written permission for the medication to stay with the student. These rare circumstances are usually for field trips and involve the need to carry asthma medication or an epinephrine kit for severe allergic reactions to insect stings.

You can download the following forms and take them to your child’s doctor appointment when needed. Please note that medication prescribed to be taken three times a day, can be taken before school, after school, and at bedtime.

Medical Power of Attorney

If you and your spouse will be out of town at the same time during the school week, or, if you are a single parent who will be going out of town, you will need to complete a Medical Power of Attorney for your child(ren). A copy of this form should be given to the school nurse in the Health Office, and to your designee, before you leave. This form does not need to be notarized.

If your child:

  • has a chronic health condition such as asthma, diabetes, seizures
  • has a life-threatening food or bee sting allergy
  • will need medication during school hours

Please inform the office staff. You will need to come in by appointment and meet with the School Nurse, Vicky Westland RN, the week before school starts, so everything is in order for your child by the first day of school. Please review these forms to see which may apply for your child. If so, a local (in Brussels) healthcare provider will need to complete the forms. The information request forms are completed by parents.
