Working with Undergraduates and Graduate Students to Improve Science Education

i-Tree Academic: Teaching Future Arborists, Urban Planners, Consultants and Natural Resource Managers the Value of Urban Trees

The goal of the i-Tree Academic Project is to integrate i-Tree software into university and technical school curriculum. I-Tree is a state-of-the-art, peer-reviewed software suite from the USDA Forest Service that provides urban and community forestry analysis and benefits assessment tools. Through an agreement with Davey Tree Expert Company, the National Arbor Day Foundation, and the Society of Municipal Arborists, we are working to disseminate and provide technical support and training for the suite.

i-Tree tools are also being used to help colleges and universities evaluate their carbon sequestration potential and to strengthen their tree and forest management policies and programs. At a March 2010 Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference in College Park, MD, for example, Supervisory Research Forester Mark Twery demonstrated i-Tree for campus business officers, who are increasingly responsible for ensuring sustainable practices on their campuses.
