CBP Detains Man Wanted by NYPD

(Wednesday, February 13, 2013)

San Juan, Puerto Rico – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the San Juan seaport detained a citizen of the Dominican Republic, sought by the New York City Police Department for Bail Jumping in the Second Degree.

Santiago Baez-Paredes, 57, a legal permanent resident, arrived at the Pan American Dock West in San Juan on board the M/V Caribbean Fantasy from the Dominican Republic and presented himself for CBP inspection.

Law enforcement databases alerted to an outstanding warrant for his arrest from the New York City Police Department.

“Customs and Border Protection is an agency committed to securing our borders while at the same time cooperating with other law enforcement agencies in the enforcement of U.S. laws. CBP officers conduct themselves with utmost diligence and professionalism and will ensure that individuals that have transgressed the criminal justice system and are encountered at our borders are identified and detained,” stated Marcelino Borges, director of field operations for Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands.

CBP officers in San Juan confirmed Baez-Paredes’ identity and verified the outstanding warrant. They notified Homeland Security Investigation agents, who took custody of the subject for extradition proceedings.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
