1/16/2013 - SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Master Sgt. David Balanger was named the Air Force's top civil engineering operations flight superintendent of 2012 in an announcement Jan. 15.

Balanger, who just in-processed at the 364th Training Squadron's Field Training Detachment 1, located at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., won the Daniel's Award for his work while assigned to the 627th Civil Engineering Squadron at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma, Wash.

"I really enjoyed working as an operations flight superintendent," Belanger said after being recognized for winning the award by Col. Om Prakash, 82nd Training Wing vice-commander. "There were lots of opportunities to work some really neat projects while I was in AMC (Air Mobility Command)."

Some of those opportunities including being the ground boss for the 2012 Air Expo at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, which was attended by over 200,000 visitors to the base. Belanger was also instrumental in the development of the plan for a 5,000 foot multi-purpose facility for the base civil engineering squadron.

"The superintendent job was always interesting because on some days I was working in a public works role (with the Army)," Belanger said. "Other days I was wearing my civil engineering hat working on deployment projects...so there was never a dull moment."

Before being named the Air Force-level award winner, Belanger won the AMC-level award, marking the first time in his career he has received both major command and Air Force level recognition.

"It's exciting," Belanger said. "A bit surprising when I found out, but I am definitely thrilled."

For Belanger, who is a pavements and heavy equipment operator by trade, moving duty assignments and jobs is always bittersweet.

"I'll be working as a CDC (career development course) writer at Fort Leonard Wood," he said. "I will definitely miss my old job being a superintendent, but I am ready to step into my new position and help mold the future of our career field."
