How ORISE is Making a Difference

Scientific microscope

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) is helping the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and other funding entities make informed decisions about the quality of science they pursue. Through a customizable peer review process that relies on independent, academic and other expert reviewers, ORISE is providing sponsors with assurance that:

  • proposed research is scientifically feasible
  • proposed development will met objectives
  • research conclusions are credible
  • ongoing research or development is suitable for continued support

To learn more about how ORISE is making a difference by ensuring the quality and credibility of scientific information and funded research through rigorous peer review management, browse through some of the peer review and evaluation examples listed below:

Supporting DOE’s mission to recognize outstanding scientists, engineers

In FY12, ORAU provided peer review and award ceremony support to several DOE Office of Science award programs.

Enhancing Tools and Services to Support DOE Research

ORISE improved its Web-based tools prior to the five-day U.S. Department of Energy’s Hydrogen Fuel Cells and Vehicles Technologies annual program evaluation and review.

Cost Savings and Customer Service

ORISE team built a project tracking and management system with off-the-shelf products—an immediate cost and time-saver.

Standardization of Scientific Peer Reviews

ORISE’s Scientific Peer Review Program is using a new initiative termed “inter-rater reliability” to establish standards or a level of agreement among reviewers when rating a proposal.

Funding and Support for DOE Research

ORISE serves as the primary coordinator of DOE Office of Science peer reviews for funded research.

Supercomputing

ORISE is helping to advance and increase accessibility of high performance computing facilities.

Implementing Improvements

ORISE sets the standard for automated scientific peer reviews by continuously implementing process improvements.

Homeland Security

ORISE supports DHS mission-focused Centers of Excellence and reviews a number of ongoing national security programs that are critical to our nation’s ability to counter terrorist attacks.

Enhancing Energy Efficiency

ORISE supports DOE in its mission to reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil and develop energy efficient technologies for buildings, homes, transportation, power systems and industry.
