Miami VAHS’s Commitment to Women Veterans

The Miami VA Healthcare System celebrated the grand opening of a new Breast Imaging Center at the Bruce W. Carter VA Medical Center Aug. 5, 2010. The new center is located in the Medical Center’s Radiology Department and will provide comprehensive breast imaging services for Women Veterans. Services offered at the new center include digital mammography, stereotactic core breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, fine needle aspirations and cyst aspirations.

Program Description

The Women's Health Program at the Miami VA Healthcare System provides comprehensive, equitable care to Women Veterans.  The program includes outpatient, inpatient and residential services.

Services Provided

Outpatient Services

Primary Care and Specialty Clinics:  Provides medical evaluation and treatment, including the following preventive, education and treatment services.

Primary Care

  • General health examinations
  • Osteoporosis risk assessment
  • Colorectal cancer screening
  • Cardiovascular risk assessment
  • Hypertension evaluation
  • Smoking cessation counseling
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Breast cancer evaluation and treatment
  • Sexual trauma referrals
  • Maternity care referrals (Fee Basis/Community providers) Newborn's care not included.
  • Social Work referrals
  • Vaccinations
  • Other treatment

Specialty Care

Women's Health Clinics

The Women's Health Clinic is located in Room A-105 on the first floor of Bldg. 1, from 8:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.
Women's Wellness Clinic:  The Women's Wellness Clinic provides high quality medical care for women, including comprehensive gynecological and medical evaluations and treatment.  Gender-related preventive care, especially for cancer is provided:

  • Pap smears
  • Breast examinations
  • Sexual transmitted disease screening
  • Family planning and contraception
  • Preventive health education, i.e. breast self examination and other health topics
    Mammography referrals

Gynecology Clinic

The Gynecology Clinic provides acute treatment and gynecologic assessment, surgical evaluation, post operative follow-up and ambulatory procedures (i.e. colposcopy). Menopausal counseling and treatment is available.  The clinic is available at the Medical Center and one day a week at the Broward OPC.

Social Work

  • Psychosocial assessments
  • Referrals to VA and community resources
  • Outreach to community agencies and organizations

Screening Mammography: is performed by Radiology Service at the Medical Center and the Broward OPC.  Diagnostic mammography is available at the Medical Center.

Breast Clinic:  A Breast Clinic is available at the Medical Center one day a week to provide evaluations and follow-up.

Sexual Trauma Clinic:  A multi-disciplinary treatment team, including a psychiatrist, psychologist, and a social worker provides assessments, evaluations, and treatment for men and women who have a history of military sexual trauma.

Other Outpatient Mental Health Services:  Mental health services are available through consultation to Mental Health and Behavioral Science and Psychology Services for depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance abuse and other conditions.  A psychiatric clinic is available ½ day a week in the Women's Health Clinic.  Mental health services are also available within the Primary Care Teams at the Medical Center and the Outpatient Clinics.

Inpatient Services: Inpatient services for Women Veterans are available in the following Services:  Medical, Surgical, Long-Term/Extended Care/Community Living Center, Spinal Cord Injury Unit and Mental Health & Behavioral Science.

Residential Services: Residential treatment programs are also available in Mental Health and Behavioral Science Service for mental stress, depression, substance abuse, PTSD, and other mental health issues.
