Reps. Maloney, Pallone, Gutierrez and Sen. Lautenberg reintroduce bill for Indonesian refugees seeking asylum

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Representatives Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Frank Pallone (D-NJ), and Luis Gutierrez (D-IL)  reintroduced legislation in both the Senate and House to allow certain Indonesian refugees to reopen claims for asylum.  Many Indonesian Christians who fled their native country to avoid religious persecution are now faced with deportation after years of living, working, and paying taxes in the U.S.  The legislation introduced today would provide a legal avenue for these individuals to reapply for asylum in the U.S.

Maloney applauds FHA for helping New Yorkers impacted by Superstorm Sandy

WASHINGTON, DC – Today in response to a question posed by Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) at a hearing of the Financial Services Committee, Federal Housing Administration (FHA) Commissioner Carol Galante announced that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will streamline the approval of FHA loan applications of multifamily apartment owners in New York and New Jersey.

Maloney calls on House to pass Violence Against Women Act

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-12-NY), today called on GOP House leadership to pass the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) approved by the Senate yesterday. “It’s inexplicable to me that the House Republican Leadership blocked even a vote on VAWA renewal in the last Congress,” Maloney said. “In this new Congress they must schedule its consideration and allow members to vote their conscience on whether our sisters, daughters, nieces and mothers should have the extra protections afforded by VAWA since its original passage in 1994.”

D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) urged House GOP leadership to bring to a vote the bipartisan Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Reauthorization. With bipartisan support earlier today, the Senate passed S. 47, a strong VAWA Reauthorization measure, on a 78-22 vote.

Carolyn Maloney (D-New York), Patrick Meehan (R-Pennsylvania), Scott Rigell (R-Virginia), and Elijah Cummings (D-Maryland) were joined by law enforcement officials from across the country in unveiling the first bipartisan bill in the House of Representatives during this Congress to make firearms trafficking a federal crime and impose stronger penalties for “straw purchasers” who buy guns for convicted felons and others who are prohibited from buying guns on their own.

On 20th Anniversary of Family & Medical Leave Act, Reps. Maloney, Connolly & Norton Push Paid Parental Leave for Federal Employees

Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today introduced the “Federal Employees Paid Parental Leave Act” (FEPPLA), which would provide all federal employees with four weeks of paid parental leave upon the birth or adoption of a child.

As First 9/11 Health Award Letters Go Out, Reps. Maloney & Nadler, September 11 Victim Compensation Fund Host Public Forum for Applicants

Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn) and Jerrold Nadler (D-Manhattan, Brooklyn), chief House sponsors of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act, joined Sheila Birnbaum, Special Master of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF), to co-host a VCF public forum at Baruch College in Manhattan for persons interested in learning how to apply for health care coverage and financial compensation for adverse health consequences experienced as a result of exposure to toxins at Ground Zero after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The first award decisions were mailed out by the VCF yesterday.
