Conservation Volunteer Information
  The Conservation Volunteer Program (CVP) formally began operation in 1986. Since its inception, over 200,000 hours of service have been provided to help manage natural and cultural resources. Active duty and retired military members and civilians of many ranks and professions are involved in the CVP and represent a cross-section of the community. On average, over 60 members are active in the program each year. Volunteers’ are attracted to the CVP primarily through their interest in hunting and fishing on Base but are also attracted for the camaraderie and interest in nature. Volunteers are assigned projects and are supervised by NREA staff members. Our volunteers receive thanks at an annual awards meeting for their contribution in maintaining lands and recreational programs that support our military services.
 

CVP members have been involved in the following projects and more: 

  • constructed equipment storage sheds, a wildlife viewing platform, information kiosks, fishing access areas, boat docks, trail bridges and display cases.
  • provided hunter education courses and helped NREA operate the Game Checking Station.
  • constructed an archery site, waterfowl hunting blinds, and wheelchair accessible hunting and fishing facilities.
  • Guided hunting trips for disabled veterans/wounded warriors.
  • collected litter and trash from roadsides, cemeteries, and training areas in an ongoing attempt to keep the Base clean.
  • helped with wildlife surveys and ecosystem research.
  • cleared roads and trails for access into the training areas.
  • planted for wildlife food and soil erosion control in training areas.
  • posted signs to delineate training areas and mark no-hunting zones.
  • installed fish habitat and conducted water quality surveys.
