NDU is excited to announce its migration to the Google Cloud, where students will be able to use their own devices. This computing environment is different than any you may have experienced in other JPME programs, and will more closely resemble that of civilian universities.
The University has a wireless domain, an .edu domain, and a secure computing domain. Students will receive a network account allowing the use of NDU networked devices in the library and in classrooms, and the ability to access CAC-enabled sites such as NDU’s student information system, DES. The library’s .mil café is open to students who need access to restricted .mil domains. Students who need access to NDU’s classified computing environment can set up accounts with their DIA representative. Students will be assigned an NDU Google Cloud email address and wireless network account once they provide their device’s MAC address and sign the NDU user agreement. This will allow students to surf the web, check email, use Blackboard (for course content) and access library services and resources.
Students should bring with them a relatively new tablet or laptop of their personal preference. Word processing will be available through NDU’s Google Cloud; however, NDU recommends student devices be loaded with Microsoft Office, Open Office, or iWork to allow for offline work. DoD offers a Microsoft home use program for Mac and Windows at an extremely low cost. Students should also protect their personal devices with anti-virus software such as McAfee or AVG Anti-Virus Free. McAfee may be available to students at no- or low-cost through their home agency or military service, and is available via iTunes (McAfee WaveSecure) and Android Apps.
