Hello to all SMHS Jaguar Parents, Teachers and Students!

A s members of the Sigonella Middle/High School Parent, Teacher and Student Organization (PTSO), we are excited about continuing to serve our community each year, and doing all we can to make this the best year ever. Each year, the PTSO tries to “fill in the gaps,” by providing events and programs that are beneficial to the education and well-being of our parents, teachers and students that are not otherwise provided for.

Some of the events the PTSO sponsors:

- School contact and location information via maps for new arrivals at base indoc/ICR

- Fall and spring school pictures service

- Sponsorship of holiday bookmark contest

- Scholastic book sales

- Quarterly awards programs to recognize academic and curriculum excellence

- Spring book fair

- Box Tops for Education drive

- Sponsorship of school Geography Bee

- Donation to the Community Scholarship Fund for members of the Senior Class

- Teacher & Staff Appreciation Weeks (to make sure they know how much we value all they do!)

- Sponsorship of Career Practicum Volunteer Luncheon to show the school’s appreciation of community members giving their time and resources to enable students to experience career fields in real-life situations.

- Reimbursement to all requesting member teachers for up to $50 of out-of- pocket classroom expenses

- Quarterly General Membership meetings.

- School leadership with information and discussions on areas of concern or appreciation throughout the year.

So you see, the SMHS PTSO is a large part of many of the good things that are happening at our school. Please join us in supporting our efforts by becoming members of the PTSO, and most especially, by becoming involved in your child’s school experience by showing your support in doing all we can to make the experience a top quality one, or by actively being part of the reason this school becomes all that you want it to be. Your membership form and PTSO opportunities can be found below. Please make a copy of the form and return it to the Registrar’s office at SMHS or mail it to: SMHS PTSO, PSC 824, Box 2630, FPO AE 09623 Thanks!

Please feel free to contact us at any time at SigonellaMiddleHighSchoolPTSO@gmail.com or via the PTSO mailbox in the main office.

Some Volunteer Opportunities throughout the school year:

School pictures - usually Oct and April - Coordinate two/three days each time with Art Moore, our school photographer.

Box-Tops – Encourage, collect, submit, reward! Set your own system and schedule for collection and help recognize and reward advisory classes who do the best job of collecting box tops.

Publicity - Help get the word out! Year-round.

Hospitality - Make new parents/students and visitors feel welcome at our school. Year-round.

Resource and Fund raising - Help coordinate increasing resources.

Scholastics Book Fairs – Fall and spring. Help our Scholastics coordinator execute this much appreciated opportunity to provide our students and community with great books!

Spelling Bee – We are exploring the possibility of sponsoring a Spelling Bee this year along with our Information Center staff.

Career Practicum – This program gives our students the opportunity to get local, on-the-job experience in a career field they are considering. Our effort is to assist the school in maintaining good relationships between the excellent community members who volunteer their time and resources to have our students be a part of their workplace during the year. Main event is a luncheon in the spring at the close of the program year.

Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week - Planning, plus one week of showing the teachers and staff how much we appreciate all they do with decorations, small gifts, tokens and an informal luncheon.

College Nights - One evening fall and spring - Coordinate with schools and potential community reps/alumni/recruiters to bring our students college night opportunities just like the students in the States.

Lost and Found Maintenance - Can we consolidate and clean this up to facilitate returning valuable items? Year-round, once a week or so.

School Store – We are hoping to work with the Booster Club and put together a selection of school spirit items along with common supply needs, pencils, notebooks, etc? Year-round.

If you have experience in any of the above, if any of these areas peak your interest, or if you have other suggestions that you think the PTSO should be doing, please let me know soonest.  We are coordinating the calendar and our efforts for the year and would like to see you a part of the team.  Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you feel would make a good teammate/coordinator for an effort such as these.
