Reports:
Storm
of the Week Pilot Project
|
Summary: This report documents the results of a pilot
project to provide recurring dual polarization training to the field forecaster. The project was
jointly conducted by WDTB, ROC and NSSL. Date: 12 April – 10 May, 2011

Conference Papers:
Zittel, W.D., Zhongqi, J., 2012:
Comparison of a 2-D Velocity Dealiasing Algorithm to the Legacy WSR-88D Velocity Dealiasing Algorithm During Hurricane Irene.
30th Conference on Hurricanes, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.
|
Summary: This paper provides a brief description of a two-dimensional velocity
dealiasing algorithm that will become the primary velocity dealiasing algorithm for the WSR-88D with the fielding of a new software
release in the fall of 2012. While reducing velocity dealiasing errors over the legacy WSR-88D velocity dealiasing algorithm for a
wide variety of meteorological situations, it is especially good at reducing errors in hurricanes by up to a factor of ten at low
elevation angles.

Initial Assessment of the Dual-polarization Quantitative Precipitation
Estimate Algorithm’s Performance for Three Dual-Polarization WSR-88Ds 92nd AMS, 28th IIPS, New Orleans, LA.
|
Summary: This report documents an initial assessment into the performance of
the Dual Polarization Quantitative Precipitation Estimate algorithm for three radars in the southern plains. |
Crauder, D., Zittel, W.D., 2008:
Evaluation of a Faster Scanning Strategy for the WSR-88D Combined Range Aliasing Mitigation Techniques.
88th AMS, 24th IIPS, New Orleans, LA.
|
Summary: This paper demonstrates that the enhanced VCP 121 (described in paper
above) can run successfully when only two rather than three Doppler scans are used for the two lowest elevation angles. This results
in a reduction of 30 seconds for the VCP throughput time with only a slight increase in range folding and velocity dealiasing errors.

Combined WSR-88D Technique to Reduce Range Aliasing Using Phase Coding and Multiple Doppler Scans.
88th AMS, 24th IIPS, New Orleans, LA.
|
Summary: This paper describes an enhancement to the Multiple PRF Dealiasing
Algorithm (VCP 121) to further reduce range folding by using the Sachidananda-Zrnic phase coding scheme for the first of three Doppler
scans. Range folding can be reduced to no more than 2% of the velocity field out to a range of 230 km.
