    On October 31, 2012, Ambassador Fulton visited Thule Air Base. She was accompnied on the visit by USDAO Captain Alister Borchert. The purpose of the visit was participate in a Town Hall meeting and and award presentation on the occasion of the 2012 Wingman Day.

    In late October 2012, Ambassador Fulton visited Nuuk. During the visit she met with Aaja Chemnitz Larsen, Greenland's Spokesman for Children, who is designing programs to provide Greenlandic children and youth a safe and secure environment.

    Ambassador Fulton stopped by Nuuk Rotary Club for a meeting about U.S. elections, resource development in Greenland, and economic growth.

    Because education and research are among key areas of U.S. - Greenlandic cooperation Ambassador Fulton also met with Minister Palle Christiansen to discuss ongoing and potential new avenues of collaboration.

    Meeting Mayor Asii Chemnitz Naarup, Mayor of Nuuk municipality which is Greenland's largest and includes nearly one-fourth of Greenland's population was also on the agenda. Among other things, Ambassador Fulton and Mayor Naarup discussed...

    She also met with students from Greenland University to discuss a range of topics of interest to Greenlandic students, including wildlife protection, military cooperation, and studying in the U.S.

    A major item on the agenda of the visit was to talk about new areas of cooperation between the U.S. and Greenland. To that end Ambassador Fulton met with Premier Kupik Kleist.

    In March 2012 the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in collaboration with Detachment 1 brought a group of Danish journalists to the Thule Airforce Base. The purpose of the trip was for the journalists to get better acquainted with the work that is done at the base and for the journalists to meet key staff at the base.

    Ambassador Fulton visited Thule Air Base in January 2012 to participate in a Town Hall at the Air Base. During the visit, Ambassador Fulton also had the opportunity to meet with Greenlandic apprentices working at the Air Base.

    Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton arrived in Nuuk, Greenland May 11 to participate in the Seventh Ministerial Meeting of the Arctic Council.  She is pictured here with Greenland Premier Kuupik Kleist and US Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark Laurie S. Fulton.

    The Arctic Council is composed of the eight Arctic states, with involvement of Arctic indigenous groups, and is the pre-eminent intergovernmental forum for cooperation in the Arctic. At this meeting, Secretary Clinton will sign an Arctic Search and Rescue Agreement, the first binding international agreement among the eight Arctic States and an important step in saving lives in the region.

    In February 2009, a delegation consisting of U.S. Embassy Copenhagen Public Affairs staff and Fulbright Commission staff visited Nuuk for three days. The trip had many purposes:

    • To see the final result of a two-year English Language Fellow (ELF) program in Greenland sponsored by the Embassy. The ELF had made a production of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliette set in a Greenlandic setting with a cast consisting solely of Nuuk 9th and 10th graders.
    • To have meetings with the Greenlanding government re establishing more and better opportunities for Greenlandic students to study in the U.S.
    • To establish collaboration with Greenlandic educational institutions re Embassy sponsored English teaching programs.
    • To visit the Embassy sponsored American Corner at Eskimoslottet in Nuuk.
    • To build relations with Nuuk University.
    • To meet with representatives of the Greenlandic media.
    • To improve the Embassy's understanding of issues of importance to the Greenlandic community.
  • 2008 - U.S. Senators Visit Greenland to See Effects of Climate Change

    July 27-29, 2008

    Ten members of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works, led by Committee Chair Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), visited Greenland July 27-29 to view firsthand the effects of climate change on the Arctic environment, in preparation for upcoming deliberations on new legislation to address global warming. Accompanied throughout by Danish Environment Minister Connie Hedegaard, Embassy Copenhagen Political/Economic Counselor Bill Mozdzierz and leading Danish and U.S. polar specialists, the Senate delegation toured the Jakobshavn ice fjord near Ilulissat and reviewed the impact of climate change with Greenland Home Rule Minister of Health and Environment Arkalo Abelsen. Members of the delegation were Chairman Boxer, Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA), Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-MD), Sen. Bernard Sanders (I-VT), Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN).

  • 2007 - U.S. Representatives Visit Greenland to Study Arctic Environment

    July 20 - 22, 2007

    Chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Science and Technology Rep. Bart Gordon (D-TN) led a delegation of ten Members of Congress to Greenland July 20-22 to observe changes in the Arctic environment and hear directly from polar scientists about ongoing research on global climate change. Accompanied by National Science Foundation Director Arden Bement, leading American specialists and Embassy Copenhagen Political/Economic Counselor Bill Mozdzierz, the congressionaldelegation surveyed the Jakobshavn ice fjord near Ilulissat and visited the Sondestrom radar facility in Kangerlussuaq. In their July 20 meeting with Greenland Home Rule Foreign Minister Aleqa Hammond, Chairman Gordon and his delegation reviewed bilateral cooperation and underscored U.S. interest in strengthening and broadening relations with Greenland.
    Members of the delegation were Chairman Gordon, Rep. Lynne Woolsey (D-CA), Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-CA), Rep. Baron Hill (D-IN), Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC), Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA), Rep. Brad Miller (D-NC), Rep. Daniel Lipinski (D-IL), Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) and Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD).

    2006 - Senate Delegation Led by John McCain Studies Climate Change in Greenland

    Kangerlussuaq and Ilulissat

    August 23-24, 2006

    Enhancing our dialogue with Denmark on climate change, a United States Senate delegation led by Senator John McCain (Republican, Arizona), traveled to Greenland August 23 and 24 to meet with Greenlandic and Danish officials and to engage with climate change experts. The Senate Delegation was hosted by Greenland Home Rule Deputy Premier Josef Motzfeldt, Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs Per Stig Møller, and Danish Minister for the Environment Connie Hedegaard. While in Greenland the Senators visited Kangerlussuaq and Ilulissat, where they traveled by boat to view the Ilulissat Ice Fjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The delegation was also surveyed from the air the Ilulissat Glacier, one of Greenland's most active, and were able to see firsthand developments in the Arctic environment there.

    In addition to Senator McCain and Mrs. Cindy McCain, the other members of the U.S. Senate Delegation included Senator Saxby Chambliss (Republican, Georgia) and Mrs. Julianne Chambliss, Senator Mel Martinez (Republican, Florida) and Mrs. Kitty Martinez, Senator Lindsey Graham (Republican, South Carolina), and Mrs. Brooke Burr, the wife of Senator Richard Burr (Republican, North Carolina).
