U.S. Representatives Visit Greenland to Study Arctic Environment

Chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Science
and Technology Rep. Bart Gordon (D-TN) led a delegation of ten Members of
Congress to Greenland July 20-22 to observe changes in the Arctic environment
and hear directly from polar scientists about ongoing research on global
climate change. Accompanied by National Science Foundation Director Arden Bement,
leading American specialists and Embassy Copenhagen Political/Economic
Counselor Bill Mozdzierz, the congressionaldelegation surveyed the Jakobshavn
ice fjord near Ilulissat and visited the Sondestrom radar facility in
Kangerlussuaq. In their July 20 meeting with Greenland Home Rule Foreign
Minister Aleqa Hammond, Chairman Gordon and his delegation reviewed bilateral
cooperation and underscored U.S. interest in strengthening and broadening
relations with Greenland.
Members of the delegation were Chairman Gordon, Rep. Lynne Woolsey (D-CA), Rep.
Jerry McNerney (D-CA), Rep. Baron Hill (D-IN), Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC), Rep.
Phil Gingrey (R-GA), Rep. Brad Miller (D-NC), Rep. Daniel Lipinski (D-IL), Rep.
Todd Akin (R-MO) and Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD).
