DizzinessWelcome to the Department of Otolaryngology, also known as ENT (ear, nose and throat). We are located on the first floor of Bayne Jones hospital with the eye clinics but are a separate service from them. Otolaryngology deals with disease of the ears, hearing, nose, sinuses, throat, voice box, and head and neck. We are a surgical service offering surgical treatment of these disorders as well, when they are needed.

The BJACH ENT service consists of one active duty physician and one nurse, as well as ENT technicians. Our goal is to provide timely service and compassionate care for active duty service members, retirees, and dependents.

Otolaryngology is a unique field that deals with very specialized disease processes, which can be hard to understand. Below are links to some information that you may find useful. A complete examination by an ENT physician is required to accurately diagnose one of these problems, if you feel that you suffer from them.

ENT - For general information on the practice of Ear, Nose and Throat medicine, please see the website for the American Academy of Otolaryngology: http://www.aao-hns.org/

SinusitisSinusitis - infections and chronic inflammation of the sinuses can cause several symptoms. These usually include nasal congestion, facial pressure, and runny nose. Allergies can also make sinus problems worse. Strategies to improve sinuses include controlling allergies, rinsing out the sinuses with saline solutions, and in some cases antibiotics. Click here to learn more about treating the sinuses and sinus surgery.

DizzinessDizziness - a sensation of spinning or being off balance can sometimes indicate a problem with the inner ear, or vestibular system, though not always. If you are dizzy, it is very important to first have an evaluation by your primary care doctor. If they feel your dizziness may be coming from your inner ear, you will be referred to an ENT specialist. Click here for an article that discusses the dizziness that can come from the ear.

TinnitusTinnitus - ringing in the ear is also referred to as tinnitus. This is usually a sign of hearing loss. While tinnitus is not harmful to the body, it can be a distressing symptom. There are several treatment options. Anyone experience ringing, will first need a complete hearing testing and then an examination by an ENT specialist. The following website has great information to explain this disease and its treatments: www.ata.org
