Our Living Oceans

Our Living Oceans

Our Living Oceans (OLO) provides a report card to the Nation on the biological health of U.S. living marine resources. Since 1991, OLO has presented an overview of principal fishery and protected resource stock assessments conducted by NOAA Fisheries. In 1992, feature articles were added to highlight issues impacting the agency’s assessment, management, and/or field activities of note. Past features have covered the 1991-1992 El Nino, Bycatch Problems and Fishery Management, Atlantic Striped Bass, Pacific Northwest Salmon, 1994 Marine Mammal Protection Act Amendments, the Precautionary Approach, New England Groundfish, and a Status Review of King Mackerel in the Gulf of Mexico.

Fisheries Economics of the United States

This is the first publication in the new series, Economics and Sociocultural Status and Trends, reporting economic data related to commercial and recreational fishing, and fishing-related industries in the United States. This report covers the 1997-2006 time period and includes descriptive statistics on commercial fisheries landings, revenue, and price trends; recreational fishing effort, participation rates, and expenditure information; and employer and non-employer establishment, payroll, and annual receipt information for fishing-related industries.

NMFS Scientific Publications Office (SPO)

NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, founded in 1871 as the U.S. Commission on Fish and Fisheries, is the Nation's oldest Federal conservation agency. As such, it has been publishing the results of its research for more than 125 years, and the tradition of scientific publishing is continued today by the NMFS Scientific Publications Office (SPO) in Seattle, Washington. Formal NMFS publications include the quarterly journals, Fishery Bulletin and Marine Fisheries Review, and the NOAA Professional Paper series (formerly NOAA Technical Report series). In addition, the SPO provides technical and administrative editorial support to NMFS headquarters offices, which includes coordinating publication of several series of the NOAA Technical Memoranda NMFS, including Our Living Oceans, and other special publications.
