San Clemente, Calif.—U.S. Border Patrol agents prevented a smuggling attempt on Interstate 5 yesterday resulting in the seizure of more than 10 pounds of methamphetamine.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., agents at the I-5 checkpoint encountered a 25-year-old male Mexican national driving a 2004 Ford Focus. The man was referred for a secondary inspection. A Border Patrol K-9 team performed a cursory inspection of the vehicle resulting in a positive alert. Agents searched the vehicle and discovered five packages of methamphetamine in the left and right rear quarter panels. The five bundles weighed 10.14 pounds and had an estimated street value of $202,800.

The suspected smuggler and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation. The vehicle was seized by the U.S. Border Patrol.
