Organ Transplant Labeling and Packaging

The OPTN/UNOS OPO Committee created color-coded, organ-specific labels to help reduce errors in organ shipment. View and order labels now on the UNOS online store *

As of January 2011, OPTN policy requires that all OPOs and transplant centers use the external, internal and vessel labels that are distributed by the OPTN contractor when shipping or transporting organs outside the donor hospital.

A January 2012 webinar updates the transplant community on changes to the organ transport labeling system. View the labeling and packaging webinar recording.

UNOS' Department of Evaluation and Quality recently updated a resource form for members to use in verifying the accuracy of documentation, labeling and packaging of transplantable organs. Members are encouraged to use the revised form, effective September 1, 2012, although it is not required.

The form summarizes in one location key information reviewed by site surveyors during OPTN site visits of OPOs. It provides additional space to document the use of extra blood vessels and tissue typing material.
