Battle Command

Command and Control (C2) is the exercise of authority and direction by a properly designated command over assigned and attached forces in the accomplishment of a mission. (FM 3-0, FEB 2008) It is both an art and a science. Commanders must be able to creatively and adaptively utilize all of the resources available to them in a precise and logical fashion. In operations, this is accomplished through Mission Command (essentially the decentralized approach of issuing Operations Orders) and Battle Command. Battle Command is defined as:

The art and science of understanding, visualizing, describing, directing, leading, and assessing forces to impose the commander’s will on a hostile, thinking, and adaptive enemy. (FM 3-0, FEB 2008)
