EPA offers tips on how to properly use a moisture meter to test firewood before using in a wood-burning stove or fireplace. Wet wood can create excessive smoke which is wasted fuel. Burning dry, seasoned firewood with a moisture content of 20% or less can save money and help reduce harmful air pollution- indoors and out.  Moisture meters that allow you to test the moisture level in wood are available in all sizes and can cost as little as $20.   For more information about the correct way to burn wood, go to http://www.epa.gov/burnwise For more about EPA: http://www.epa.gov/ We accept comments according to our comment policy: http://blog.epa.gov/blog/comment-policy/ Disclaimer: The U.S. Government does not promote or endorse any non-Government or commercial content appearing on this page.
