6/21/2012 - MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- The McConnell Education Office held an education fair at the Robert J. Dole Community Center on June 19, 2012.
The fair brought colleges and universities together in a central location providing military members, family members and Department of Defense civilians an opportunity to learn more about the education programs on and off base.
Approximately 40 representatives from numerous online schools, local colleges, universities and on-base agencies were there to give the most up-to-date information on their programs. Tuition assistance, College Level Examination Program testing, the GI Bill, night school and online classes are available to those who are interested and qualify.
"In today's budget constraints, the Air Force wants to promote best of the best," said Chief Master Sgt. Stuart Allison, 22nd Logistics Readiness Squadron superintendent. "They want to promote people that are proactive and are bettering themselves. Education allows you to be on forefront on the changing times."
According to the March 20, 2012, Bureau of Labor Statistics report, the 2011 unemployment rate for veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time since September 2001 was 12.1 percent.
"Having your education is key," said Jamie Hembrough, 22nd Force Support Squadron education counselor. "Current service members, as well as veterans, need to understand what educational benefits are available to them."
At McConnell, there are degree programs available through Butler Community College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Southwestern College and Webster University.
