1/30/2013 - COLUMBUS AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- One of the items that the 14 FTW will be graded on during the upcoming Consolidated Unit Inspection is the wing's overall compliance with standards. This is different than the many checklists that your duty section may be running. This is an area that each person reading this column can impact.

As part of the Team BLAZE build-up to the upcoming CUI, this will be a continuing piece highlighting different standards in each article. The standards discussed may be under-practiced, little known, or perhaps forgotten.

While some topics may seem trivial to the reader, see how many violators you notice as you go about your business throughout the wing. Each of you are encouraged to educate your peers on the topics, and correct those that are not compliant.

Did You Know?

- Let's Talk Ink: (AFI 36-2908, para 3.4) Tattoos, brands, and body markings are authorized - yet strictly controlled by AFI. We all know that guy or gal that can't wait for pay day to get the latest piece of art they've been working on all week. But when he shows up for work in uniform on Monday and there's a colorful dragon inching out of the top of his t-shirt trying to nibble on his Adams apple...you wonder "that aint right, right?" So, let's go direct to what is wrong and just as wrong.

- Unauthorized: Tattoos, brands, and body markings (anywhere on the body) that are obscene, commonly associated with gangs, extremists / supremacist organizations, or that advocate sexual, racial, ethnic, or religious discrimination are prohibited both in and out of uniform.

- Excessive: These are authorized tattoos brands and body markings that cannot be hidden while properly wearing then normal duty uniform to include any combination of an opened collar long or short sleeve uniform (exception applies for PTU). Excessive is defined as any tattoos/brands/body markings that exceed 25 percent of the exposed body part and are readily visible when wearing any or all uniform combinations. Any tattoos/brands above the collarbone, i.e. on the neck, head, face, lips, and/or scalp are prohibited. For example, a tattoo/brand that can be seen on the neck while wearing an open collar, front- fastening, blue or utility uniform is prohibited.

- While this column is not meant to empower a witch hunt, it is to remind both the Airman to wisely choose where they place their "art" and to remind the supervisor to enforce the standard.

If you have questions about, or would like more information on, any of the above standards, see your First Sergeant!
