Island communities depend on delivery of goods, materials and equipment via waterborne transportation.  USACE provides safe commercial and recreational navigation improvements that are vital to the island economies.

Some completed projects include Honolulu Harbor on Oahu, Hilo Harbor on the Big Island, Kahului Harbor on Maui, Kaumalapau Harbor on Lanai, Kaunakakai and Kaulapapa Harbors on Molokai, and Nawiliwili Harbor on Kauai.

The Corps of Engineers incorporated Ecosystem Restoration as a project purpose within the Civil Works Program in response to the increasing national emphasis on environmental restoration and preservation.  The objective of Ecosystem Restoration is to restore degraded ecosystem structure, function, and dynamic processes to a less degraded, more natural condition.

Nothing could be more important to the saving of lives and property than hurricane and storm risk management projects. Completed projects include Kawainui Marsh on Oahu and Alenaio Stream on the Big Island.  These projects give local citizens peace of mind and security.

Civil Works Program

The Civil Works Program is a major component of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  Our Civil Works programs include water resource development activities including navigation safety, hurricane and storm risk management, ecosystem restoration, hydropower, and recreation.  

Examples of our Civil Works projects are everywhere in Hawaii and in U.S. Territories in the Pacific, including Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands.
