Upon the announcement of his retirement, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory's (ARL's) Director John Miller was nominated, elected and then inducted as an Honorary ARL Fellow during a ceremony held on May 25, 2012 conducted by the ARL Fellows.
The title "Honorary Fellow" is one that the ARL Fellows may use to recognize an individual by virtue of whose achievements are of conspicuous merit, outstanding and have provided long-term contributions to the objectives of the ARL Fellows organization.
The ARL Fellows, as defined by its charter, is an independent, honorary organization through which Miller relentlessly advocated for the continual pursuit of activities leading to strengthening of scientific and technical innovation in ARL research.
Miller was designated an Honorary ARL Fellow in recognition of his enduring and distinguished service to the promotion of research throughout the ARL enterprise, and for his persistent support and encouragement of the ARL Fellows activities.
He placed the highest priority on strengthening the expertise and reputation of the research staff, mentoring and methods to attract and develop quality research staff and students, and opportunities to ensure access to first-class research facilities.
"I am deeply grateful and will treasure this honor above all others," Miller said shortly after his induction.
As an Honorary ARL Fellow, beyond his upcoming retirement, Miller will be invited to participate in future semi-annual meetings, and contribute with the collective expertise of the Fellows to the promotion of ARL.
