  • SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics just promoted Dr. Mark Dubinskiy to the rank of Fellow.
  • Dr. Dubinskiy's significant technical accomplishments cover an array of laser-based technologies.

Dr. Mark Dubinskiy, a physicist and team leader in the Sensors and Electron Devices Directorate at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory and an Optical Society of America Fellow, was recently promoted to the rank of Fellow of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.

According to the society, Dubinskiy was promoted to SPIE Fellow "for his achievements in research and development of new laser materials, advanced laser concepts and architectures for highly-scalable and efficient solid-state lasers."

Dubinskiy's significant technical accomplishments cover an array of laser-based technologies, including new laser gain materials from ultraviolet to mid-infrared, solid-state high-gain stimulated Brillouin and Raman-scattering materials, thermal management techniques for bulk and fiber solid-state lasers, as well as new laser concepts, architectures, and advanced components for highly-scalable, efficient, and nearly diffraction-limited eye-safe solid-state lasers (bulk and fiber).

Among his many accomplishments, Dubinskiy established the first ultra-low quantum defect (QD) eye-safe laser and was the first to demonstrate the significant scaling potential of resonantly cladding-pumped, low-QD, Yb-free, Er-doped large-mode-area fiber lasers and amplifiers with ~ 75 percent efficiency.

"I feel extremely pleased to be selected as a SPIE Fellow," said Dubinskiy.

He stated that SPIE honored 75 Fellows this year, which is approximately 0.04 percent of the entire SPIE membership. While other professional societies elect to the rank of Fellows approximately 0.5 percent of their membership in a given year, the entire Fellowship of SPIE elected since 1955 is 0.5 percent, which is about 900 out of 180,000.

"This is one of the highest existing recognition standards, and I am sincerely grateful for this recognition of my scientific contributions by the community of peers," Dubinskiy said.

Dubinskiy believes that being promoted to SPIE Fellow will assist his research in significant ways.

"I have pretty well developed scientific connections outside of ARL and worldwide, and I hope that my induction as a SPIE Fellow will further strengthen this network in order to leverage worldwide technology for ARL," said Dubinskiy.

He noted that this is even more important now, in the light of the latest guidance by the Defense Science Board Basic Research Task Force Report of January 2012, which indicates that leveraging worldwide research could benefit the Department of Defense disproportionally among global armed forces.

Dubinskiy is also a member of the Directed Energy Professional Society. He served as an associate editor for Optics Express from 2005?2011 and has been an editorial board member for Laser Physics Letters journal since 2009.
