Many health conditions are associated with being severely obese—but research offers hope.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Extreme obesity is difficult to treat through diet and exercise alone, and for some, bariatric surgery may be an effective option. Some types of this surgery restrict stomach size, while others decrease intestinal length. But both procedures carry substantial risks, including death.
Our Institute supports and works with six clinical centers and a data coordinating center for the Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery. This initiative, called LABS, recently reported that short-term complications and death rates were very low.
