Industrial Capture and Storage (ICCS): Area 1

According to 2009 data from DOE’s Energy Information Administration, slightly more than one-quarter of the total U.S. CO2 emissions were attributable to industrial sources such as cement plants, chemical plants, refineries, paper mills, and manufacturing facilities The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provided DOE/NETL the opportunity to develop and demonstrate advanced technologies that capture and sequester or beneficially reuse carbon dioxide emissions from Large-Scale industrial sources in a range of geologic formations.

Three active projects from a variety of industrial sources make up this portfolio. CO2 produced as a by-product in the production of fuel grade ethanol will be captured and sequestered in a sandstone reservoir using dehydration and compression (Archer Daniels Midland). CO2 produced in two steam methane reformer (SMR) hydrogen production plants will be captured using a vacuum swing adsorption (VSA) system and sequestered through use in enhanced oil recovery (Air Products and Chemicals). Finally, CO2 will be captured through Lurgi’s Rectisol process from a petcoke-to-methanol plant (Leucadia Energy) and sequestered through use in enhanced oil recovery.

The Large-Scale Industrial CCS Projects (Area 1) are managed by NETL under the Major Demonstrations Program. In October 2009, the DOE announced the selection of 12 large-scale projects intended to capture CO2 from industrial sources for storage or beneficial use. These Phase I projects were cost-shared collaborations between the government and industry to increase investment in clean industrial technologies and storage projects. The Phase I duration of each project selected was approximately seven months. On June 10, 2010, DOE selected three projects from Phase I to enter into Phase 2 for design, construction, and operation. Potential additional applications for funding of large-scale industrial carbon capture and storage projects are pending further clarification and review.

The status of the ICCS: Area 1 projects is summarized as follows:
