Public Affairs

The U.S. military engages in Public Affairs to provide trusted counsel to leaders; build, maintain, and strengthen morale and readiness; enhance public trust and support; and achieve global influence and deterrence.

Public Affairs seeks to inform decision makers and communicate the service's requirements, capabilities, actions and achievements to the world and keeps the local communities fully informed with complete and accurate information. Our programs are designed to increase public understanding of the Department of Defense mission.

The Joint Base San Antonio Public Affairs offices are the focal point for providing information about the JBSA mission, issues, programs and installation events to service members, community members and members of the news media.

The Public Affairs staff conducts base tours, provides speakers for civic and educational organizations in the community, provides base multimedia services, publishes weekly newspapers and is the commander's liaison between the base and local media organizations.

Please contact your location's PA office for more information.

tabMedia Relations
The Media Relations section of public affairs produces news releases on newsworthy JBSA events, missions, programs and activities. We work with the news media to provide interviews, coordinate visits and to respond to queries. We seek every opportunity to tell the DoD story by reaching the public through local, regional and national news media organizations.

All media queries and requests for interviews must be coordinated through the Public Affairs office. During normal duty hours (7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays), you can contact us by emailing the appropriate local Public Affairs office. If you have an urgent media query after normal duty hours, contact the 502nd ABW Command Post at (210) 671-4225 and ask to have the on-call Public Affairs representative return your call.

In the event of a base disturbance or other major event, JBSA Public Affairs Office will update the Straight Talk Line, which provides accurate information and updates regarding the situation. For more information during actual real-world or exercise situations, call the Straight Talk Line for a recorded announcement.
tabHometown News Release
Joint Hometown News Service (JHNS) provides accurate, timely and factual news releases about military people to newspapers, radio stations, and television stations in their hometowns.

A directorate of the Defense Media Activity's Production Component, JHNS is headquartered at Fort Meade, Maryland, with additional print, broadcast, and photography personnel in Yokota, Japan; and Ramstein, Germany. The staff of military and civilian personnel produces a variety of print and electronic news products highlighting the accomplishments and worldwide activities of individual members of the U.S. armed forces. Each year more than 500,000 individual news releases are distributed to the 14,000 newspapers, television and radio stations subscribing to Hometown's free service.

The Print News Branch processes DD Form 2266 Hometown News Release submissions and produces and distributes short print news releases about the individual accomplishments and activities of service members to their hometown news media.

Location specific Hometown News Release forms can be found in the links at the right side of this page.
tabHonorary Commander's Program
The Honorary Commanders Program provides JBSA and its commanders a community outreach opportunity to foster relationships between local civic and business leaders and base personnel.

The purpose of the program is two-fold: It allows community participants to become more aware of the important installation, USAF and Department of Defense military mission, and it allows military commanders and their units to learn more about the community in which they live.

New Honorary Commanders are inducted bi-annually in a reception and ceremony. Elected officials who are military retirees or those with extensive military backgrounds will not be considered for this program since there are other avenues to integrate them.
tabBand Request
To request a band, please contact the following:

tabCommunity Relations
The objective of community relations is to increase public awareness and understanding of the Joint Base San Antonio mission. JBSA's robust community relations program reaches multiple cities across all of the San Antonio area. We support our surrounding communities in all aspects, ranging from speaker's bureau, tour requests and flyovers. Our goal is to foster positive relations with the surrounding communities. Participation in community events by JBSA service members is desirable and highly encouraged.

Please contact your local public affairs office for more information regarding community relations programs.
tabBase Tours
JSBA offers organized group tours upon request and availability. Visitors must provide their own transportation and are limited to one bus load. Certain conditions and restrictions apply to all base tours, which can be discussed with a public affairs representative.

Here are a few to consider:
- Tours are booked on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Tours requests will only be accepted 4-6 weeks in advance.
- Tours are limited to groups no smaller than 15 and no larger than 40.
- Tours are not provided to individuals, non-organized groups, or groups under the age of 13.
- All visitors over the age of 18 must have U.S. federal or state government issued identification. For security concerns, we cannot host foreign groups unless they have been cleared through their embassy.

When requesting a tour, please provide the following information:
· Full Name
· Date of Birth
· Drivers license and state
· If the person is too young to have a drivers license, please let us know.

If your organization has any questions or to schedule a tour, please contact your local public affairs office.
tabSpeaker's Bureau
The speaker's bureau gives JBSA members the chance to directly interact with its neighbors in the community, professional organizations, schools, businesses and civic organizations. Our speakers consist of military and civilian personnel from a wide-array of job descriptions. Most community organizations request speakers to talk about specific job descriptions or personal experiences in the military.

Your organization may request a speaker and we will try to match up a speaker to your specific request. To make a request, please contact your local public affairs office. Please allow at least three weeks prior to your meeting date when making a request.

Installation personnel wishing to join the speaker's bureau can also contact their local public affairs office.
tabAerial Event Requests
Community relations helps facilitate flyovers and static display request that JBSA performs in the community. To start a flyover request, submit a DD Form 2535 at www.airshows.pa.hq.af.mil and receive approval from the Air Force Aerial Events office at the Pentagon. JBSA can only consider your request after you have approval from the Pentagon.

Flyovers are considered for aviation-related and patriotic observances held in conjunction with Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, POW/MIA Day, or Veterans Day (event must be within seven days of the actual holiday dates to be considered). There are some exceptions to policies; those not meeting the criteria can possibly be approved one-time only as an Exception-to-Policy event, provided there is sufficient rationale for support.
