Mayor Rogero, Council Hold Budget Retreat
Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and City Council members held their annual Budget Retreat today to discuss the mid-year financial report for the 2012-13 Fiscal Year and to begin developing a framework for the 2013-14 budget.
During the retreat, Mayor Rogero gave a brief overview of her administration's progress. "The budget reflects the vision and goals of our city. We remain committed to the vision of building a greener city, a lively downtown, stronger neighborhoods, a high quality of life, and growing businesses and jobs," Mayor Rogero said.

Mayor Rogero's Statement on Lakeshore Property Proposal
The following is Mayor Madeline Rogero's statement on legislation proposed by State Sen. Stacey Campfield requiring the sale of state property at the former Lakeshore Mental Health Institute:
"I strongly disagree with Senator Campfield's proposal to sell off state land at Lakeshore. The City of Knoxville has a longstanding agreement with the state about the transfer of Lakeshore to the City, which will protect the land as a public asset for generations to come. This transfer has been underway for a number of years and the city has already invested substantially in Lakeshore Park. Senator Campfield has had no conversations with the City administration about his proposal, and we strongly oppose it.
This proposed legislation would damage a highly-used and treasured City park, which is open for all Knoxvillians to enjoy. In addition, it would be bad policy to limit the state's ability to choose the best manner by which to dispose of any of its surplus property."

Regional Forum Feb. 20 on Disability and Accessibility Issues
How well is the East Tennessee region prepared to meet the needs of people with disabilities now and in the future? That is the subject of a forum from 9-11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20th, sponsored by the Knoxville Mayor's Council on Disability Issues (CODI) and Plan East Tennessee (PlanET). The forum will be held in the Jacob Building at Chilhowee Park.

City Sponsors 2013 Neighborhood Conference on March 23
The City of Knoxville's Office of Neighborhoods is sponsoring its first-ever Neighborhood Conference for Knoxville and Knox County residents on March 23, 2013, at the Knoxville Convention Center. With the theme of "Connecting Neighborhoods, Building Community," the day-long conference will offer more than 30 workshops on issues including codes enforcement, crime prevention and neighborhood organizing. Registration, admission and parking for the conference are free.

Metler Drive Recycling Center to Relocate
The City recycling drop-off center at 820 Metler Drive off Clinton Highway, operated by Goodwill, will be permanently closing on Feb. 27th, 2013.The recycling containers and Goodwill attendant will be relocated to the new Goodwill facility at 5412 Pleasant Ridge Road, at the corner of Pleasant Ridge and Merchant Drive.

New Parking Hours to Take Effect This Month on Gay Street
Signs are going up along South Gay Street in downtown Knoxville indicating new hours for public on-street parking spaces. Maximum parking time has been increased from one hour to two hours, between Summit Hill Drive and the Gay Street Bridge.

City Accepting Agency Grant Applications
The City of Knoxville is currently accepting applications from nonprofit organizations interested in obtaining a City Community Agency Grant (CAG) for FY 2013-2014, which begins on July 1, 2013. The deadline for filing an application is 4:30 p.m., Friday, March 1, 2013. The City will not consider any application received after that time. To apply for a grant, the nonprofit organization must operate within the City of Knoxville and must have been in operation for at least five years.
