ORNL publications submitted outside require copyright notice
Classification Officer Dave Hamrin has provided the following reminder, excerpted from the Lab's prime contract with DOE, regarding ORNL scientific or technical articles being submitted to outside publishers:
"The Contractor shall mark each scientific or technical article first produced or composed under this contract and submitted for journal publication or similar means of dissemination with a notice, similar in all material respects to the following, on the front, reflecting the Government's non-exclusive, paid-up, irrevocable, world-wide license in the copyright.
"Notice: This manuscript has been authored by UT-Battelle, LLC, under Contract No. DE-AC05-00OR22725 with the U.S. Department of Energy. The United States Government retains and the publisher, by accepting the article for publication, acknowledges that the United States Government retains a non-exclusive, paid-up, irrevocable, world-wide license to publish or reproduce the published form of this manuscript, or allow others to do so, for United States Government purposes."
Explains Dave, "This 'copyright notice' keeps us from having to get permission from the publisher to re-use our own figures. Be sure to include it on your journal submissions."
