Udall Congratulates Former Fort Carson Soldier on Medal of Honor Announcement
President Obama to present Medal of Honor to Staff Sgt. Romesha on Feb. 11
Today, Mark Udall congratulated former Army Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha on the news that the former Fort Carson soldier will receive the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions in Afghanistan while serving with a Fort Carson-based unit. Romesha will be the fourth living service member to receive the medal for actions in Afghanistan or Iraq.
"Staff Sgt. Romesha is a hero in our midst," Udall said. "His courageous actions during one of the most vicious Taliban attacks of the Afghan war are a testament to the values and spirit of our soldiers. In the face of overwhelming odds, Staff Sgt. Romesha repeatedly risked his own life while rallying his men, recovering fallen teammates, and directing the counterattack. Every soldier at COP Keating demonstrated incredible courage, determination and skill that day -- and Staff Sgt. Romesha's actions stood above the rest. His selflessness, leadership and valor are truly deserving of our nation's highest honor."
Romesha will receive the Medal of Honor for his courageous actions on October 3, 2009, at Combat Outpost Keating, Kamdesh District, Nuristan Province, Afghanistan. He was a Section Leader with Bravo Troop, 3d Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
In addition to the Medal of Honor, Romesha has received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Romesha's award ceremony is scheduled to be held Feb. 11, 2013. For more information from the White House, go HERE.
