USADF began programming in Senegal in 1986

Previously focusing on small locally-owned enterprises, USADF has recently been providing grants to underserved populations to create economic development opportunities through improvements in areas of agricultural production and organizational capacity building.

Focus: Improving economic opportunities in marginalized communities through value-added agricultural chain development and improved skills in marketing and management.  

Marginalized: USADF grants target farmer cooperatives and associations in geographically remote locations in Senegal, including communities in the northern Sahel Belt and the natural Casamance region, to increase incomes for ethnic minorities, women, youth and persons with disability. USADF grants focus on strengthening groups’ capabilities to achieve their own objectives and results in household food security attainment, income generation improvement and improved livelihoods.

Food Security: USADF grants primarily focus on food production supporting a wide range of projects including irrigated rice and vegetable production, cowpea, sesame and fonio production and processing. This is especially needed in areas that are virtually inaccessible during the rainy season.  

Conflict/Post Conflict: USADF grants ensure that marginalized populations attain economic independence and food security in hopes of maintaining the internal peace in the Casamance region and around the country. Programming in the Casamance presents challenges as there are still occurrences of a nearly 30 year old conflict and struggle for independence—the longest in Africa.
