New Public Artwork “Tidal Radiance” to Enhance Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier

The facade of the Port of San Diego’s new Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier will be enhanced by a luminous public artwork by Leni Schwendinger, an internationally-known artist and lighting designer.

By day, the large-scale artwork, titled “Tidal Radiance,” blends into the blue and green colors of the building. But at night, the artwork transforms the facade into a dynamic, richly colored, form.

After nightfall, colorful patterns are projected onto the pier’s surface. The patterns are evocative of the natural elements of San Diego Bay.

On Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, the Port of San Diego will become the second California port and the fifth port in the world to power cruise ships with shore-side electricity.

The shore power system enables a cruise ship to turn off its diesel engines while in port and plug into the power supply from shore, resulting in a significant reduction in harmful air emissions. In port that day will be Holland America’s ms Oosterdam, which will be powered by the shore system. The $7.1 million project was partially funded by the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District Board through a $2.4 million Carl Moyer state grant. Other partners include the California Air Resources Board, Cochran Electric Inc. and San Diego Gas & Electric.

39th Annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights Taking Place on December 12 and 19

Nearly 50 vessels bedecked in holiday lights and finery will illuminate San Diego Bay this Sunday evening, December 12 and next Sunday, December 19 in the 39th annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights.

The parade starts at 5:30 p.m. with a fireworks show. Vessels will begin departing from Shelter Island immediately after the show's finale. From Shelter Island, they will proceed to Harbor Island, then to the North Embarcadero area, Seaport Village and south to the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, Coronado Ferry Landing and then back to Shelter Island. The entire procession should take two hours. The schedule remains the same for both Sunday nights.

Board Approves Agreements to Move Forward with Convention Center Expansion EIR

The Board of Port Commissioners approved a resolution selecting ICF International for environmental review consulting services on a project to expand the San Diego Convention Center and to build a hotel adjacent to it. The action was made at the December 7 Board of Port Commissioners meeting.

ICF is a global professional services firm with experience working with government and commercial clients on a broad range of projects. The company has a San Diego office and several other locations throughout the United States and around the globe.

Port of San Diego Proposes Permit for In-Water Hull Cleaning in San Diego Bay

In an effort to reduce the amount of copper pollution in San Diego Bay, the Port of San Diego is recommending that businesses conducting in-water hull cleaning on recreational or commercial vessels first obtain a permit before doing any work within the Port’s jurisdiction.

The proposed permit and a planned Port Code amendment allowing enforcement of the requirements were developed with the help of the boating community, including hull cleaners, marina operators and boatyards.
