Tropospheric Ozone Changes:

Observations, state of understanding, and modeling requirements

Workshop at NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory, Boulder, Colorado USA

October 14-16, 2009

The workshop will focus on measurement series ~15 years or longer in length and aims at a critical review of ozonesonde, surface, and aircraft measurements and more recently satellite observations. It will address the quality of individual datasets, their suitability for inferring the long-term behavior of ozone, the consistency of data sets with each other (see figure below), and statistical methods of time series analysis. One goal of the workshop is to provide better understanding of the observational limitations and constraints of the existing records. The measurement community and those engaged in analyses of the data will share their expertise. The workshop will also benefit from modelers who have looked at longer term changes in tropospheric ozone and can lend their perspective on how observations and modeling can be combined to lead to a better understanding of changes in tropospheric ozone. A major goal of the workshop is to determine what the robust changes in ozone have been in various regions as inferred from the entire suite of reliable data. The agenda will include an opportunity for presentations on:

  • Observational time series (their strengths and weaknesses).
  • Consistency of various data records.
  • Statistical techniques and their application in detecting long term changes.
  • Assessment of our understanding of long term variability.
  • Evaluation of models with observations and using models to improve our understanding.
