The 39th Army Band, New Hampshire Army National Guard can trace its lineage back 125 years to its inception in Manchester in 1879. When activated for the Spanish American War, it was known as the Band Section, 1st Infantry, New Hampshire National Guard. During World War I, it became know as the Band Section for 1st Army Headquarters Regiment. During World War II, it was known as the band for 172nd Field Artillery, New Hampshire. Since 1947, it has been known by its current designation 39th Army Band New Hampshire Army National Guard.

The band is stationed in Manchester, New Hampshire at the Manchester Readiness Center located at 1059 Canal Street. The 39th Army Band has represented the United States of America overseas on missions that have included St. Croix, Virgin Islands, Athens, Greece and Good will Ambassadors to the country of Costa Rica in July 1995. We recently performed for President George W. Bush during a New Hampshire visit and assisted the state of Louisiana during the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.

The band is comprised of musicians representing many communities throughout our state. The members of the 39th Army Band are dedicated soldiers whose high standard of performance is respected and anticipated wherever they perform. Truly, the 39th Army Band is a shining example of New Hampshires soldiers at their finest.

Band Performances

Why stop performing when you graduate High School? By serving part-time in the 39th Army Band you can pay for college, perform professionally and have fun while making new friends and serving your community.

As a New Hampshire Army National Guard member you could qualify for an Enlistment Bonus, Student Loan Repayment Program, Montgomery GI Bill, Tuition Assistance (up to $4500 a year), and 100% Tuition Waiver at State Run Schools, UNH, Keene State, Plymouth State and all Community Technical Colleges.

The 39th Army Band conducts auditions throughout the year for current and projected vacancies. Interested musicians may contact the 39th Army Band to schedule an audition at their convenience. The audition process consists of an interview, a prepared solo piece, demonstrated knowledge of scales, and sight reading

Once accepted, qualified applicants who are not prior military would be eligible to enlist through the Civilian Acquired Skills Program (CASP).This allows enlistment at the accelerated rank of Specialist (E4). New soldiers are then required to complete 9 weeks of Basic Training, followed by 4 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT) held in Norfolk Virginia School of Music.

Some of the performing groups in the band include a Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Rock Band, Woodwind Quintet, Brass Quintet, and Small Jazz Combo. The 39th Army Band performs throughout New Hampshire.
