Fort Detrick values its soldiers, families and civilians and works to provide programs that serve the local, small businesses, employees and community involved with Detrick. Volunteer Detrick promotes and strengthens volunteerism by uniting community volunteer efforts, supporting professional management, enhancing volunteer career mobility, and establishing volunteer partnerships to support individual personal growth and life-long volunteer commitment.
Army Community Services (ACS) programs are foremost in importance to Soldiers and their Family members during time so deployment and assignments. ACS programs help provide the tools and resources for them to remain "Army Strong" as they focus on their missions and care for Family members. Among these programs are the Employee Readiness Transition Program, the Exceptional Family Member Program, Army Emergency Relief (AEF), Family Advocacy, and Relocation Readiness. Fort Detrick is committed to providing Soldiers and Families a quality of life that is commensurate with their service, and; promises our Families a strong supportive environment where they can thrive.
Fort Detrick applies its strength of strong business partnerships with surrounding academia to continue to build the pipeline for future workforce talent at Fort Detrick. The workforce is further strengthened through internships and workforce mentoring programs to ensure leadership skills are instilled in the entire Fort Detrick workforce.
Currently about 400 students are enrolled in the Young Engineers and Scientists program (YES), which offers students in 7th & 8th grades the opportunity to spend one week during the summer in a laboratory setting learning basic scientific principles. The concept is to have near-peer mentorship at the middle school/high school level in a summer science education enhancement program. Accomplished local high school and college students serve as near-peer mentors, armed with kits, tools, enthusiasm, time, and talent for exciting "hands on" science projects. The sessions are held in laboratories at Hood College to further enhance the learning experience. This in-school summer internship permits Fort Detrick's US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) and US Army Center of Environmental Health Research (USACEHR) scientists to share their knowledge and expertise with students and teachers in the schools.
