USAID’s health program focuses on strengthening health systems and improving services and practices; expanding services to vulnerable populations, including womeninfertile age (15-44 years old), children under five years old and populations most at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS; improving the skills of health professionals to provide quality health services; and partnering with municipalities, government institutions, civil society, non-government organizations and the private sector to address the communities’ basic health needs. Despite health improvements in El Salvador, some gaps still remain in meeting the special health needs of women, youth, children under five, and high-risk groups for HIV/AIDS.Maintaining these improvements, closing the gaps, securing financial support from higher levels of the Government of El Salvador (GOES) and greater participation of private health sector providers are the key major challenges so that accessible, equitable and quality health services are available. USAID is supporting the Ministry of Health (MOH) and other key stakeholders in the provision of high quality services to target populations and in building skills among healthcare personnel in order to provide better care for mothers, children, and HIV/AIDS most-at-risk populations (MARPS), including youth.
