Quick Facts About Athletic Scholarships

  • Athletic scholarships are available for students pursuing undergraduate study only.
  • You must meet the admissions requirements of the university or college to which you are applying, as well as the initial eligibility requirements of the Athletic Association through which you are seeking eligibility.
  • Athletic scholarships are generally issued by the university, not the Athletic Association, and are often awarded initially for a one year term. To be eligible for renewal, student-athletes on scholarship must meet and maintain pre-determined academic and athletic standards. Students will be notified by July 1st if their award will be renewed or reduced for the following academic year. Individual schools have appeal policies for scholarships that are not renewed or reduced.
  • Athletic coaches play a significant role in deciding who will receive athletic funding, what it covers, and whether or not it will be renewed.
  • Most athletic scholarships do not cover all costs. Full scholarships cannot exceed tuition, fees, room/board and books. Typically partial scholarships provide a determined financial reward, covering either tuition/fees or room/board, or will cover a percentage of financial need.
  • Student-athletes may be eligible for certain academic merit based scholarships, need-based aid or financial aid offered through their athletic association. However, because of Athletic Association provisions regarding amateurism, certain types of external financial aid cannot be accepted by student-athletes. Questions about limitations to financial aid should be directed to the university or college financial aid office or athletic department.
  • Athletic scholarships can place you under enormous amounts of pressure – coaches who offer you money will have high expectations about your athletic performance.
