News: Third Army changes deputy CG

SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. – The Chief of Staff of the Army today announced a change in the Third Army/U.S. Army Central leadership team.

Maj. Gen. Gary H. Cheek, deputy commanding general, Third Army/ARCENT has been selected for deputy commanding general for Support/Chief of Staff, Installation Management Command, San Antonio, Texas.

Maj. Gen. Michael T. Harrison Sr., currently commanding general, United States Army Japan/Commanding General, I Corps (Forward) will be replacing Cheek as Deputy Commanding General, Third Army/ARCENT.

Harrison is no stranger to South Carolina, having commanded the Victory Brigade (Initial Entry Training), at Fort Jackson from Dec. 2000 to Aug. 2002. He is also familiar with the ARCENT area of operations having served as the Deputy Commanding General (Programs), Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan from 2006 to 2007.

The exact date of Cheek’s departure and Harrison’s arrival has not yet been announced.
